Codes and conventions

Technical and camera shots:

Action often use bright and low lighting to show the audience who is the hero and who is the Villain. Also to show what kind of place they are in.

Action films mostly have fast cuts because there is lots of fighting and movement. They do this to engage the audience and to make it less.

It also has close up to the characters face to show facial expressions their emotion when all the action and tense moments are happening.

High shot to show all the characters in one scene.

                                                                                  

Symbolic Codes

The characters often have blood on their body to show the viewer that they have been close to the action and drama.

Character often starts with clean clothes and then after that the ending, they are all dirty. Which is a symbol for their situation.

Written and Audio Codes

Action thriller usually have fast pace music and soundtrack to help emphasise the tense moments to create suspense and to match the action.

Also have music to suit the character to show the audience if he or she is an evil person of a hero.

Diegetic: inside the film - dialogue, action

Non-diegetic: outside of the film – soundtrack, voice-over or sounded added into the film during the editing process

Write a post about the target audience – age, genre, interests. 

In movies targeting audience is a big thing. For action they need action, fighting, loud sound effects and violence to be able to capture 10 to 60 years old audience.  For 10 and below they need laughter and clumsiness and less violence.

How do the reoccurring themes in the genre attract the audience and their interests?

By placing things that they want to see and what they expect like for example action genre, the audience expect to see gun fights, violence and loud sound effect.

mise-en-scene: The arrangement of scenery and stage properties in a play.

Close up: showing a specific detail of mise en scène. Everything else is just a blur in the background. Magnify an object of a part of a body like the face.

Side shot: camera been place to the side to make the scenes more interesting and to include other characters in the scene.

Long shot:  including setting and character whole body.

Extreme close up: magnify a specific part of the body or object.

Medium shot: Includes half of a characters body or an object.

Bird eye view:  Overhead shot to include ground and very unnatural and strange angle. To include other character and setting.

Tracking shot: when the camera follows the character where ever he goes. Make the scene interesting.

 Low angle:  A decrease in height. Usually called worm eye view. Good for showing how high object or character is.

  

    

      

Certificate research

U universal is suitable for all audience of age 4 and over. There will not be scene showing drug use and violence. There will also not be bad language and sexual content such as sex.

There will be some threats that is not too scary and some violence that will be seen in a funny way.  Mostly the films that has these symbols are mostly for age of 4 to 6 years old because the scene are nearly impossible to upset a child. Some of the scene will be quite educating teaching young children the good stuff such as stay away from drug, do not curse and swear. The films will be trustable for the parents to allow their child to watch. The symbol is successful because it allows all ages to watch the films. Examples of film that is suitable: Bee movie, Bug's life and Annie.

PG stands for Parental Guidance. So these film will be suitable for eight or higher but under 8 years old will needed to be watched with a parent or someone that is 18 or over. The film may contain some violence and May upset and sensitive the children. The violence may be presented in a funny way or not. There isn't any scene that shows used of drugs and bad language. The film will include some threats that might make the children scared and might upset them. Some of the scene might be educating, teaching the child the good points such as stay away from drugs, don't smoke. The scene also will not include sexual contact such as sex but they will sometimes include touching and kissing. 

These films are mostly for 8 years old to 11 but can be watch by 8 or older but may find it not interesting enough or not violent enough. The symbol is successful because it allows the younger kids to experience some of the adult’s movies. Examples of films that are PG such as Alice in the Wonderland.

 12 is suitable for 12 and over but if 12 to 14 years old is needed to be a company by a person of age 18 or over. The film may contain strong languages such as F word or racist words. There will be violence and sometimes sexual contacts such as kissing, touching and sex. Drug use in a scene are sometimes shown in a scene and sometimes not used in the movie. The will be a lot of threats that will make audience scared and sometimes unhappy. The symbol is successful because it prepares the younger audience for adults movies.it is also successful because it allows the younger children to see and experience what they want to see. An example of 12-year-old movies: Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy.

     15 is suitable for 15 years old and older. No need parented companying. In the film, there will be some violence that is suitable for 18-year-olds and older and there will be a good amount of bad language and swearing example the F word. There will be some sexual scene such as touching, nude, sex and kissing. 

There will be lots of threats that might make the audience scared and some negative words and points that might upset the audience. Under 15 must not watch because they will learn something negative and it's too violent and not suitable for them. 
The symbol is successful because it allows 15 years old to get half of the 18-year-old movie experience and allow them to see what they want to see. It's also successful because it allows over 15-year-olds to see movies that doesn't have too much violence examples of movies that are 15 years old: A team, 47 Ronin.

18 suitable and only for 18 and over warning. Sometimes include material that makes the movie band from a different country. Also, includes lots of strong language and violence. Includes nude scene and strong sex, touching and kissing. The film cannot be sold or rent or seen by people that are under 18 years old. Some of the materials are in breach of the criminal law. Include strong images of sexual contact and nude. This is successful because it allows the audience to see what they want to see and its interest the 18-year-olds.     
        

Audience research

Genre: A category or a style of a film, book or music. 

Action: Movies that include violence, fighting and close combat. 

Adventure: Films that has exciting undertaking involving risk and physical danger, forms the main storyline.  

Romance: Film that primary focus on relationship and romance between 2 people and must have an "emotionally satisfying and optimistic ending."

Comedy:  Movies that has jokes and skills that can make the audience happy.

Horror: Films that seeks negative emotional reaction from viewers by playing on the audience's primal fears.

Thriller: Characterised and defined by the moods they elicit, giving viewers heightened feelings of suspense, excitement, surprise, anticipation and anxiety.

Mystery: Type of fiction in which a detective, or other professional, solves a crime or series of crimes. 
Sci-fi: Films that dealing with imaginative concepts such as futuristic science and technology, space travel, time travel, faster than light travel, parallel universes, and extraterrestrial life.

War: Film that concerned with warfare, typically about naval, air, or land battles in the twentieth century, with combat scenes central to the drama. The fateful nature of battle scenes means that war films often end with them. 

Drama: movies that show emotional and relational development of realistic characters.

  

Coming of age

Coming of age definition 

The genre coming of age includes past tense storyline to show immaturity. The films are mostly for teenagers 13 and above. Also, the genre mostly shows particular person's life and story and sometimes show their childhood and adulthood. these film mostly includes the death of friend or member of family or bully/conflict/abuse. like for example " Boyhood".  

Boyhood

The movie starts with a non-diegetic, happy song "Yellow" by the Coldplay combine with a video of his point of view looking up at the sky. it quickly moves to the next scene of a close-up of the boy's face and the camera shot slowly zooms out to a medium shot to a long shot showing the audience what he's wearing. 
They include a side, medium shot of the mother walking towards him that enigma the audience of wanting to know who she is. when they are walking they filmed them using side, tracking shot of them walking. they film aside, medium shot of the mother driving and also for the kid. 

The music, happy atmosphere
highlighting lots of hints that make the audience think that it's part of the comedy and coming of age genre. the kid is wearing a bright coloured t-shirt, showing the audience that he is innocent. the scene is set in the open ground outside a school.The scene is base on one specific person and that's what makes "coming of age genre" which also shows the audience that this is part of the coming of age genre.    

Empire magazine analysis

1. The masthead which is the company's name is placed on top of the page, behind the actor because it is the first thing the creator wants the audience to look at. It is written in red bold to represent royal because empire is royal. They also use the colour red to make the word stand out because it is the only red on the cover of the magazine.

2. The character is dressed in a pirate costume to give a hint to the reader that this film is set during the pirate times.

The character is posing in a firing position to show the reader that this film is an action film.

3. Here we have a list of popular movies in 2011 to capture readers attention. They placed at the front of the cover to show the reader what is in the magazine.

4. The magazine tagline is place right above the masthead to give the audience a small piece of information while enticing them to read on.
The picture is taken in a medium shot showing the audience the main features and the outfit. The character in the picture is the main character of "Pirates of the caribbean" and he is called Captain Jack sparrow. The actors really name is called Johnny Depp.This magazine is targeting audience at the age 12 and over because " Pirates of the caribbean" is ideally for 12 years old audience.

Reflection AS media project post

The film that we took inspiration for our film opening came from our director when he discovered a TV show called " Life in mars". Our teamwork and groupwork was all over the place. At the start of the year, our group was solid but near the end, the group starts to lose focus. To improve our group work this year, we will set each other objectives to do and we will share it with our teacher so that she can make sure our team is on point. The tools that we used made a huge impact in our project. It also made it easier for us to create this project. Like for example, Blogger helped us in ordering and keeping our post safe. Blogger also helped us to make our project look more appealing. Another software we use is Adobe premiere pro which made it easier for us to editing our video. The other tools we used is "adobe illustrator" which helped us to create our logo. I would say that illustrator is my expert.

Next year project we will improve our use of these tools by reading and watching guides on different editing skills. At the same time, we would try practice editing random videos.

Attack the block

Attack the block is a film about a group of teenagers and adults defending their flat from an alien invasion. In this essay, I will be exploring different stereotypes like black and white. There will be evidence from the film included to support the stereotype.  The film that I will be using is “attack of the block” and music videos.

At the start of the film, black people stereotype of being a criminal have been reinforce from this scene. The scene was a low angle shot of a black teenager named Moses threatening a lady named Sam to give him her ring. This create effects on the audience. The audience will be viewing them as a bad guy. The low shot creates an image of Moses as powerful and strong. It also creates an image on the lady as innocent and weak because she is looking up at Moses. To support the stereotype, in the scene, Moses pushes the lady on to the ground. This supports the stereotype as being a criminal because Moses attacked an innocent person. Near the scene, there was a close up of Moses knife that he pulled out to threat the lady. This also supports the stereotype. After seeing this, the audience will view them as violent and a villain.

In the same scene where Moses attacked the lady, Moses gang and himself is wearing rain coats and hoodies. This creates a senses of criminal and hidden identity. This could influence the younger audience as George Gerbner discusses in his cultivation theory. He says that if audiences are over expose to certain stereotypes then they can suffer from mean world syndrome because they end up believing that the negative stereotypes are true. For example they may believe Moses and other black youth mug indecent people. Also when they see how other teenagers are dressed, they want to become like them to fit in which relates to Claude Steelcvklle’s theory which is a stereotype threat.

Stereotype threat is where people try to live up with different common stereotypes in society.

To support this, near the start of the movie, the scene where they are riding out to kill the aliens, they were followed by 2 younger kids age 9-10 because they want to join them in the alien hunt.

In the middle of the movie, black people stereotype starts to be challenge. At the start of the film, audience viewed them as criminals, violent and bad guys but in the middle of the film, black people stereotype has been challenge and changed. In the scene, there was a medium shot of Moses saving the lady’s life by killing the alien when she was about to get attacked by the alien. After this scene, the audience starts to view them as heroes but they still view them as violent.
